What Lockdowns Mean For Sport

As if mother nature’s torrential downpours hadn’t dampened the spirits of sport in Cowra enough over the last two weeks, local clubs were hit with another blow in the form of lockdowns in Orange, Blayney and the Cabonne shire. The recent snap lockdowns had a ripple effect throughout many sporting groups in the region including most of the local clubs in Cowra. Group 10 made the call late last week to cancel all games from players 10 and above including League tag, which affected both Junior and Senior Magpies. It was disappointing news for the Senior Magpies who had secured their first win for the season the weekend prior against the Panthers. Excitement was bubbling at the thought of kicking off a winning streak with their next game that was due to be held at Sid Kallas before the government clamped down, closing off our neighbouring towns. Cowra Netball, Cowra AFL and Senior Rugby Union also made the call to cancel their games over the weekend with some citing the issues being coaches and players who come from the brim of the lockdown zones, while others were due to face opponents from the LGA areas, making the games impossible to play.

Some junior matches were able to go ahead despite the lockdowns, although strict measures were in place. Cowra will join several towns across the Central West this week as they wait anxiously for the latest health advice once the 7 day lock-down comes to an end.
