Cowra Shire Council Mayor Bill West says he is keen to continue the work he already started in the previous Council term, after being elected as Mayor at the first Council meeting since last year’s election.

Mr West was elected to another term as Mayor at the extraordinary Council meeting on January 10, with Judi Smith being re-elected as Deputy Mayor by the new Council at the same meeting.

The new Council had its first ordinary meeting on Monday, with a busy agenda worth 400 pages being addressed in what proved to be a very busy start for the new Council.

Mr West said it was “humbling” to be elected as mayor by the Council again, and said there was plenty of work to get on with to continue working on Council’s current direction.

“We’re still working hard to fill the former target premises with a new tenant, and will continue working with the landlord and the Cowra Business Chamber to solve this issue,” he said.

“Telecommunications, infrastructure and council budgets are some other very important matters I will be over-seeing as well.”

With five of the nine Councillors being elected to their first terms, Mr West said it was an exciting time for Cowra Council, and that we looked forward to working with the new Councillors.

“We have six female Councillors which is the most in living memory,” he said.

“I’ll be working to support the new Councillors and help them achieve their aspirations and come to terms with the is-sues at hand for Council.”

“We need to settle in first though because there will be a few very busy meetings ahead of us.”
