The long-awaited COVID-19 vaccine has arrived in Cowra, with several hundred doses of the European AstraZeneca vaccine delivered to Cowra on Monday.

The doses have been delivered to both the Kendal Street Medical Centre and the Medispring Family Medical Centre as part of the Federal Government’s Phase 1B of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout program.

The first doses were delivered on Monday morning to the Kendal Street practice, with Cowra’s first vaccine recipients getting the jab later that day. The jabs commenced at the Medispring practice on Tuesday. Staff at both practices also started receiving their vaccinations.

Medispring Family Medical Centre Practice Manager Eunice Adetifa said, as of Monday morning, 88 people had booked in to receive their first of two doses of the vaccine at her practice.

“The vaccine is expected to be in high demand, so we’re encouraging eligible residents to make an appointment as soon as possible,” Eunice said.

“At this stage, we’re expecting to receive 400 doses per week.” Bookings at the Medispring practice can be made over the phone, however Eunice encouraged people to book online at www.medispringfamilymedical.com.au, as all paperwork could be pre-completed this way. Eligible vaccine recipients can also make an appointment at the Kendal Street practice by phoning 6341 1400.

Both practices are expecting to receive a set number of doses each week during Phase 1B.

Under Phase 1B of the vaccination rollout, eligible recipients include people aged 70 years and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 55 years and over, health care workers not vaccinated during Phase 1A, people aged 18 years and over with specified underlying medical conditions, and critical and high-risk workers.

Federal Government health organisation, Western NSW Primary Health Network, is overseeing the vaccine roll out in western NSW.

Residents can check which phase of the Commonwealth Government’s COVID-19 Vaccination Rollout they will be eligible for via https://covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/eligibility.
