Cowra’s Poppy Starr has received one of the top awards at the 2023 Starr Limousins National Limousin Junior Show held recently from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th July at Exhibition Park in Canberra.

Poppy was thrilled to be awarded the TAS Junior Beef Expo Award at the final presentation ceremony. The award recognises an all-rounder amongst 120 competitors attending the show from NSW, VIC, QLD and SA.

The award was judged by the herdsperson judges and was based off Poppy’s engagement, enthusiasm, and contributions throughout the show. This involved her participation in workshops and games, teamwork with other competitors, keeping cattle and stalling clean and prepared.

Poppy’s prize includes entry to compete in the TAS Junior Beef Expo in Deloraine, Tasmania in February 2024, sponsored by Kanangra Cattle Co and a travel voucher to help get her to Tasmania donated by Wild Dog Travel.

Over the weekend, Poppy placed third in the Intermediate Paraders Class against a large field and some very experienced competitors. She also won third place in Cattle Class 12 - Junior Female 12 months and under 16 months, with her heifer Summit Krystal T23.

There was also a range of novelty competitions including the Limousin Youth Association amazing race, ‘show and shine’ heifer fitting challenge, and the very popular calf capers, a fancy-dress competition for calves and human in the theme 50.

In addition to competitions, the program for the weekend included a series of hands-on workshops with experienced industry professionals on topics including stock handling, clipping, meat science, animal health and AI techniques.

This year is a very important year for the Australian and New Zealand Limousin Associations as they celebrate 50 years of the breed. This milestone was celebrated with a gala diner including an auction and awards on the Saturday night of the show.
