It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Cowra Magpies following Group 10’s announcement the 2021 season would be abandoned, with one of their own, Bill Statham, in the spotlight as he was named in the 2022 SG Ball Train-on Squad for the Penrith Panthers. Bill is one of 26 players who have been recognised for their excellence from clubs including St Mary’s, Bathurst, Forbes, Dubbo, Glenmore Park, Emu Plains, St Claire and as far as Qld.

“I’m relieved and happy I got another chance now that I’m the proper age.” Bill said.

The opportunity seems to be a natural fit for the Cowra local who is confident in making the best of both worlds, combining studies and his passion.

“Moving down there next year due to university helps with commitments to training. Definitely keen to try and get amongst it though!” he said.

Being named in the 2022 squad for the Penrith Panthers brings the Magpie a step closer to a career in the NRL, and swings the door wide open for exciting opportunities. The SG Ball is renowned for picking the best, and Cowra is throwing their support behind Bill who has well and truly earned his place on the train-on squad.

Congratulations and good luck Bill.
