It has been a tough year for small businesses across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but small businesses in Cowra have cashed in, in the lead up to Valentine’s Day on Sunday.

Local florist owner Skye Muddle, who operates The Cowra Flower Co., said the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day had been very busy for her business, as well as others in town with close links to Valentine’s Day.

She said the last 12 months had been challenging, but that this year’s celebration of love had proved to be a major come-back.

“It’s a massive boost for businesses involved with Valentine’s Day, and for florists, it’s one of the biggest occasions of the year, along with Mother’s Day,” she said.

Mrs Muddle said that the prices of roses, the most popular flower for Valentine’s Day, had hiked this year due to influences from the COVID-19 pandemic, but this hadn’t turned too many patrons away. She added that it was important for Valentine’s Day gifts to be pre-ordered to avoid disappointment, especially when it came to purchasing roses and floral arrangements.

“We’ve made extra gift hampers this year to cover any shortfalls on other gifts, so there will always be something available, but for anything in particular we’re asking for pre-orders,” she said.

In a bid to boost other local businesses this Valentine’s Day, Mrs Muddle decided to team up with Regency Jewellers, The Shared Table and Katie B Photography, as a way of sharing customers’ spend. “Customers that spend $150 or more at Regency Jewellers will receive a free long-stem rose, and any purchase at The Cowra Flower Co., The Shared Table and Katie B Photography will enter a draw to win a romantic ‘boho’ picnic and photo shoot,” she said.
