Ruth Fagan Elected New Cowra Shire Mayor

Former journalist and local business owner Ruth Fagan has been elected as the new Cowra Shire Mayor after Cr Bill West stood down at last Monday’s meeting after 15 years at the helm.

Cowra Shire Councillors have elected Ruth Fagan as Mayor for the next 12 months.

At Monday night’s Council meeting, Cr Bill West, who served as Mayor for 15 years and Deputy Mayor Cr Judi Smith stood down. Cr Paul Smith was elected as Deputy Mayor.

Cr Fagan has a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the region’s growth and prosperity. A former journalist and local business owner, she has been a Councillor for 18 years and held many community positions both locally and regionally.

“Bill West’s tenure as Mayor has been marked by his unwavering dedication to Cowra and its residents. His 15 years of service have left an indelible mark on the community and his legacy of leadership and public service will be remembered and appreciated for years to come,” Cr Fagan said.

Cr West and Cr Judi Smith will continue to serve on the Council until the September 2024 local government elections, ensuring a smooth transition and offering the benefit of experience.

The newly elected Deputy Mayor, Cr Paul Smith, was elected in 2021 to Cowra Council.

He has a strong business background and holds a number of community roles.

Mayor Ruth Fagan thanked her Council colleagues and the community, saying, “I am deeply honoured to assume the role of Mayor and am committed to building on the strong foundation laid by my predecessors.

Cowra is a remarkable place, and I am excited to work with my fellow Council members, as well as the broader community, to ensure our region continues to thrive.”
