This Thursday marks the annual R U OK day. It is an important reminder to stop and check on the ones we love. Reaching out to people we care about can feel uncomfortable, but at times asking three simple words makes a world of difference to a person. The pandemic has caused significant stress to people who have lost their jobs, suffered financial stress and the people who are working on the front line day in and day out. It has never been a more important time to ask three simple words R U OK? On September 9th take a moment to think of your friends and loved ones who haven’t been doing so well, who are a little quieter than usual or who’s behavior has changed. Pick up that phone and give them a call. However, it’s also equally important to not just ask the question but also listen with an open mind and encourage action. But there is someone we regularly forget about and that’s ourselves. Taking a moment each day to stop, breathe and check in with yourself is an important act of self care. If things aren’t feeling right or you’re experiencing some feelings of anxiety or depression, reach out and talk to someone whether it be a friend, family member or your GP. Three simple words can be a lifeboat to someone who needs a hand up and it is better to stumble your way through the conversation than it is to stay silent.

We may be in lock down but our phones are not, so don’t hesitate to send that text, email, Facebook message or even better hit dial on the person’s number and have a chat, you may just save their life.
