As we fervently strive to complete our to-do lists ahead of the Christmas holiday period, it is important to reflect on what has been another eventful year.

Much of the Riverina and Central West has been affected by flooding in recent months. I appreciate the difficulties being thrown at us are significant, but our communities are resilient and I know they will bounce back and be stronger and more close-knit as a result. I draw inspiration from the compassion, generosity and determination of the people I have met and listened to across the Riverina and Central West during these tough times.

The first Christmas was a celebration of new life – the birth of Jesus Christ – and I truly hope everyone across the region has the opportunity to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life we can sometimes take for granted. No matter the challenges which may lay before us, we should always hold on to hope.

As the saying goes, the best things in life are free – take the time to enjoy the company of family and friends, express gratitude to those you care about and extend kindness and patience to fellow community members.

For too many, this time of the year is a painful time of loneliness and loss. It is important to display compassion and understanding to all – we never can fully understand what another person is going through. Thank you to those who spend time helping the less fortunate.

There will be many this festive season who are away from their loved ones, working, serving in our defence forces, health and emergency services, and those working on the land. We pay tribute and recognise the sacrifices these people make to give up their time with their loved ones to protect, serve, work, keep us safe and fed when we’re enjoying being with our friends and family. You represent the very best in human nature and I cannot thank you enough for your efforts.

If you have the opportunity, please take the time to have a break. Switch off your phone and reconnect with nature. The Riverina and Central West has wonderful walking tracks and other places to explore. If you are travelling, please take care on roads which have been badly damaged due to relentless rain.

If you are looking to complete your Christmas shopping list, please support local businesses and buy Australian-made products where you possibly can.

Our communities are only as good as the people who live in them and you play an important part of what makes our communities, large and small, the wonderful places they are to live, work and raise a family.

Catherine, my family, my staff and I extend our best wishes to all for a merry Christmas and a safe and healthy 2023.
