River Park was the place to be Sunday morning with Cowra, Mudgee, Orange and Bathurst junior league tag sides battling it out in the finals. With the Cowra’s open side and under 11’s unsuccessful in gaining their positions in the remaining shoot outs, the spotlight was on the under 13’s to carry the magpies into the final games.

Coach William Ingram said, “The girls were primed for a big game, it showed in the first quarter with their defence causing errors from Mudgee, which they took advantage of scoring tries early on.” With the girls leading into half time break they were just as quick out of the gates in the second half.

“With possession swinging the opposition’s way the girls were forced to defend for long periods and ended up with Mudgee drawing close to them late in the half.” “The girls were starting to wrestle back their momentum in the game, but a call went against them which totally turned the tide.” Coming close to the end of the clock Mudgee scored but the board was still in Cowra’s favour at 30-24.

“The siren in the background and a lapse of concentration allowed Mudgee to streak away to score and tie the game at 30 all.” Officials allowed 5 minutes each side taking the game into extra time, aping up the atmosphere with both sides leaving nothing in the tank.

“A few errors and tiring bodies, the girls ended up going down 40-30 in the end.”

Despite their loss William and his team couldn’t be prouder of the girls.

“Danielle, Joab and I are extremely proud of what the girls achieved this year and are gutted that we ended our season this early.”

“The girls have come a long way from the start of the season to our final minutes and we have enjoyed watching and teaching them all year. Riding this roller coaster with them was an amazing journey.”

Sunday’s loss means the Cowra Junior Rugby Leagues, league tag sides will hang up their boots for the season.
