Thanks to the Cowra Neighbourhood Watch, Cowra residents have access to free anti-theft licence plate screws at the Cowra Police Station.

The screws have been available there for the last month or so, and CNH Co-ordinator Nikki Kiss said there was more than plenty of packs to go around.

The Rotary Club of Cowra and Cowra Lions Club each pitched in with sponsorship funding to allow CNH to purchase the screws, which can be purchased from automotive accessory retailers, but for a dear price.

Ms Kiss said the freedom of the screws in Cowra should be a great incentive for locals to collect them and protect their vehicles and identity.

“This is all about crime prevention, people protecting themselves and being responsible for themselves,” she said.

“Licence plate theft is the number one from of vehicle crime in NSW.” “It is a form of identity theft as well”.

“These screws prevent licence plates from being removed from your vehicle. Replacing them can be expensive, up to $60, and you have to report licence plate theft to the police too, so these screws can prevent all of that.”

She said she started handing out the screws a while ago at local events, but became inundated with requests for them, so she decided to contact the Chifley Police District to have them available at the Cowra Police Station.

Anti-theft screws have a special design whereby they can only be screwed in, and not out, due to the design of the grooves at the top. Once secured, they cannot be unscrewed.

They come in three different types, and the type/s needed depends on the model of vehicle.

Ms Kiss encouraged all Cowra locals to go to the police station and get them-selves some screws.

All you need to do is let the police know what model of vehicle you have, and they will give you the correct type of screws. Some vehicles require a different type of screw for the front and back of the vehicle.
