A conference aimed at creating healthy masculinity in men will be held at the Reflections Wyangala Dam caravan park hall on March 25 and 26.

The conference, called the ‘Fair Dinkum Men’s Conference’, has been designed to help men speak up and feel comfortable showing their emotions, and avoid being struck down by the masculine stereotypes like “manning up".

It will teach men how to live practically and spiritually to create the goodness in men for the benefit of their mates, family and community.

There will also be activities like bushwalking and a chance to meet other men from around the central west.

Conference organiser Phillip Hua said it was all about creating a healthy masculinity perception for men.

“You’ve probably heard expressions like ‘man up, real men don’t cry, real men should not show their emotions, real men should use their sexual adventures as a score board’ or ‘not talk about their problems deeply’,” he said.

“There is a forest of so many presuppositions of the behaviour for masculinity, that it has resulted in 75% of men having the highest suicide rate (according to Lifeline). Men showing their prowess through physical feats have caused more drownings in Australia (according to Surf Life Saving Australia) and men suffer the highest rate of loneliness (according to Beyond blue).“

“As a result, this has created a mass label of toxic masculinity creating a culture where many young men withdraw from life’s responsibilities (according to Beyond Blue).”

National Director, author and former Anglican Bishop Al Stewart will be the guest speaker.
