Upgrades to Cowra’s Europa Park are nearing completion, with drought funding from the Federal Government making the works possible.

The improvements have been completed by Cowra Shire Council in conjunction with the Cowra Rotary Club.

The works include the following:
• a children’s driver education bicycle circuit, complete with a roundabout, rail and pedestrian crossings and full road markings was designed and built;
• A shelter for parents to supervise children on the bike track was built;
• A complete underground lawn watering system was installed and
• Solar lighting throughout the park has been installed and commissioned.

Cowra Rotarian Harry Howard said the works are part of a long term relationship with Council on Europa Park.

“Europa Park development, strongly supported by Cowra Council, has been an ongoing Rotary project over the past 18 years with Rotarians carrying out a significant part of the work,” he said.

“With the remaining program funding, plus a top-up of $6,000 from Cowra Council, a children’s swing set will be installed in the coming weeks.”

“Rotary would like to thank Cowra Council for considerable support in relation to Europa Park and would also like to thank Cowra residents for encouragement in developing Europa Park.”

Security cameras will also be installed at the park.

Europa Park is located on the eastern approaches to Cowra and is a memorial project instigated by the Rotary Club of Cowra in Rotary’s Centenary year - 2004. The park has strong historical significance and was developed as a tribute to the 17,000 migrants from 27 European Nations who passed through the Cowra Migrant Centre between 1948 and 1955. Nothing remains of the Migrant Camp but Europa Park is the site of the entrance to the former camp.

The park was formally opened by Mr. Paul Couvret OAM in February 2005, and the following works have been completed since then:
• Trees have been planted and a fine, circular, concrete pathway has been laid;
• A stone memorial wall, holding plaques of the 27 nations which were represented at the Migrant Camp has been built and the pavement in front of the wall is laid with personalized pavers of the families that were at the Migrant Camp and
• Lunch shelters, BBQs, a toilet block and exercise stations have been erected
