Ellie Carpenter Impresses at Tokyo 2021 Olympics

It may come as a surprise that Cowra had a small lookin when it came to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics with 21 year old local girl Ellie Carpenter hitting the field for the Matilda’s. It wasn’t all that long ago Ellie was recognised as not only the youngest female footballer to compete in an Olympics at the tender age of 16, but she would also take home the title of the youngest Australian competitor in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But she didn’t stop there with her resume boasting the 2018 AFC Asian Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup and the recent Tokyo Olympic Games. Her spotlight continues to shine, with the newest announcement that Ellie alongside 5 of her teammates have been nominated for the PFA Players Awards 2021 for remarkable individual seasons.

Enduring a brush with Covid-19 and a delayed start to the Olympics, the Matildas defender pushed through to become a standout fixture on the Australian team. Renowned for her versatility, Ellie is recognised for her ability to play multiple positions, including full back and wing back. While in Tokyo, the Matildas announced Ellie had reached her 50th cap, meaning she has made 50 appearances for her team in international matches.

Despite their wins against New Zealand and Great Britain, the Matildas entered into a shootout against the USA women’s team for the bronze medal. With the scoreboard separated by 1 point, the Matildas suffered a heartbreaking loss in the final leg of the Olympics, losing to USA and finishing in fourth place.

Despite their loss, it is the furthest the Matildas have gone in any Olympic games, which has resulted in people flocking to social media to shower the team in support and love for their strong and tireless efforts.
