The South West Group of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) is very busy getting ready for the state-wide cooking competition, which is due to take place in May this year. The Group’s “The Land” Cookery Officer, Ann Howell, organized a “How To” cooking session last Saturday 11th February in Boorowa, which was attended by 16 members. The instructor was Leona Irvine, who came from Canberra to impart her wisdom. Leona has been a member of CWA for more than 50 years, and is a seasoned judge of all things delicious in the state-wide cooking competition.

Participants came armed with examples of their baking and jam and pickle making. Leona took them through each part of the detailed The Land Cookery Schedule 2022/23 emphasizing that if they only remembered three words from the session, it should be “Read Your Schedule.”

Participant’s cookery was then judged. Fruit cake bakers learned to exclude peel and chop their raisins. Plain butter cake makers learned to ensure their baking paper lies flat in the tins. Chocolate cake makers learned how to spread their glace icing smoothly. The marble jaffa cake, made by a mem-ber from Quandialla, was declared perfect. Almond bread should be made with lightly toasted almonds, and seeded biscuits have a tendency to shrink while in the oven.

After Leona’s engaging presentation, participants enjoyed a light lunch and fellowship.

SWG’s handicraft and cookery day is being held on the 18th March in Cowra. Each branch submits the best of their baking and handicraft items for judging at this event. The best items then qualify to go the state-wide cooking and handicraft competition. If the examples of cooking on Saturday are any indication, SWG is going to be hard to beat.

CWA’s South West Group consists of branches in Binalong, Boorowa, Canimbla, Cowra, Grenfell, Harden, Milvale, Morongla Creek, Quandialla, and Young. You can learn more about these branches by going to: Branches & Groups cwaofnsw.org.au
