Cowra Shire Council is pleased to announce that the region’s first Drought Resilience Plan has officially been approved by the Minister, helping to put our community in a stronger position to deal with future droughts.
The plan was developed during 2024 with the support of the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund, and in partnership with neighbouring councils; Orange, Blayney, Cabonne and Weddin. It involved local input from across the region and was guided by experienced consultants from Geolyse.
The Drought Resilience Program will help Cowra businesses prepare for dry times by offering training, support, and easy to follow advice. Local business owners will get tips on how to plan ahead, manage risks, and keep their doors open during drought. Support will also go to business groups to run training sessions and bring in expert speakers.
Cowra Mayor Paul Smith said the program is a step in the right direction.
“This is about helping local businesses stay strong, adapt, and keep serving the community even when times are tough,” he said.
The program also strengthens Cowra’s future by identifying skills shortages, promoting tourism all year round, and improving awareness of mental health services. Together, these actions will make our community more resilient and better prepared for whatever lies ahead.
This is part of a national effort involving 69 regions around Australia, all working towards the same goal, to make regional communities more resilient to drought now and into the future.
