Members of the Cowra RSL sub-Branch are preparing for Remembrance Day commemorations. Along with ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day is one of the most significant for RSL members and servicemen both past and present.

Remembrance Day in Australia is on November 11th and commemorates the loss of Australian lives in all wars and armed conflicts. It is observed annually with a one-minute silence at 11am, the time the Armistice ended fighting in World War I in 1918.

The day honours those who have died or suffered for Australia in past and present conflicts and peace operations.

Commemorations occur across the country at cenotaphs, schools, and other public places. The Australian War Memorial holds a national ceremony.

Originally called Armistice Day, the name was changed to Remembrance Day after World War II to honour those who died in both wars and subsequent conflicts.

In Australia in 1993, on the 75th anniversary of the armistice, Remembrance Day ceremonies became the focus of national attention when the remains of an unknown Australian soldier were exhumed from a First World War military cemetery and ceremoniously entombed in the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Memory.

A Remembrance Day Service is to be held at the Cowra Cenotaph, Brisbane Street, Cowra, on Tuesday 11th November. The President and Members of the Cowra RSL sub-Branch invite Service Personnel, ex-Service Personnel and members of the public to attend.

All Service and ex-Service Personnel participants in the Parade are asked to assemble and form up in front of the Cenotaph no later than 10:45am.

The service will commence at 11.00am with the sounding of the siren, and a wreath laying ceremony will be included.

Veterans are requested to wear full size medals and decorations (miniatures should not be worn). A light morning tea for RSL members and guests will be held in the sub-Branch rooms after the service.
