Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke celebrates budget win for Cowra Hospital redevelopment project.

The NSW Government’s decision to honour the $110.2 million funding allocation set aside by the previous government for the redevelopment of Cowra Hospital means the project can go ahead.

It took months of intense lobbying to ensure the Health Minister fully appreciated how vital the investment in regional health was for the community of Cowra and surrounding areas.

The successful tender for the main works project will be announced very soon.

Five years ago, Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke launched a petition calling for an upgrade to the current hospital, which had served the community well over the years but was no longer fit for purpose.

“Three thousand, seven hundred and six members of the Cowra area signed that petition, representing more than a quarter of the community’s population,” Ms Cooke said.

“From there, the project has gone from strength to strength, thanks to the hard work of all involved, it is a true testament of just how effective people power can be. The hospital redevelopment will transform the delivery of healthcare in the region. It will provide a first-class facility for patients, families and carers that will meet the health needs of the community now and in the future.”

The project includes:

  • An emergency department;
  • A general medical and surgery inpatient ward;
  • A peri-operative service (a range of surgical procedures);
  • A maternity unity with a dedicated nursery;
  • Ambulatory care (services for outpatients);
  • Oral health (dental clinic);
  • Renal dialysis (dialysis treatment for outpatients);
  • Oncology (chemotherapy treatments);
  • Community health
  • Mental health, drug and alcohol services;
  • Tresillian inpatient beds for new mothers and their babies;
  • Medical imaging department including a CT scanner and ultrasound; and
  • Staff accommodation
