Ash Barty

People across the country, including Cowra, cheered on Ash Barty on Saturday night as she won the grand slam against USA’s Danielle Collins.

Ash is the first Australian to win a singles title at the Australian Open in 44 years, and was the first female to make a singles final at the same event in 42 years.

The very proud Ngarigo woman is the second aboriginal female to take home the grand slam, with her mentor and Wiradjuri woman Evonne Goolagong being the first.

Her fans watched on and shared in her victory, with many admiring her for her humble celebration with a beer on live tv. Ash defeated Danielle in a magnificent fashion, proving why she is the number 1 seed.

Ash held back the emotions when surprised with her mentor and friend Evonne Goolagong Cawley who presented her with her trophy. During her speech the crowd applauded her every word as she gave thanks to everyone in her corner. “This is just a dream come true for me and I am so proud to be an Aussie.” Barty said.

During her press conference following the win, Barty remained reserved and steered the conversation back to the amazing efforts of her team and just how much she values her friendships while she competes.

“I’m very lucky and fortunate to be able to do what I do and be able to play a sport I love for a living, I get to compete, work hard and I think I just see that as an opportunity, and there are so many things I get to experience as a tennis play-er and I’m very fortunate to be able to do that.”
