A community campaign has been launched to save the former Cowra Hospital building from demolition.
Locals are encouraged to attend town a town meeting scheduled for Saturday 12 Noon – 15/11/2025 at the Club Cowra to unite and preserve the Cowra Hospital building and take some time to explore the options of what it could become instead of turning it into a pile of rubble as is currently proposed.
The exisiting hospital building is currently pencilled in for demolition to make way for the new hospital’s carpark, as well as gardens and green spaces to lift the facility’s appearance.
The group behind the campaign believes an acre of land above the new hospital would be better suited, claiming NSW Health acquired this land in February this year.
They claim this would leave open the option of keeping the existing hospital building and repurposing it for something of value to the community, such as a retirement home.
“According to public records it appears that the Health Administration Corporation (HAC) which is the statutory body established to administer the state’s public health system acquired over 1 acre of vacant land that is situated above the new Hospital and faces directly onto Brisbane Street in February 2025,” a group spokesperson said.
“It appears this would be a much better alternative location which could be used for a carparking area for the new Hospital.”
“It is acknowledged that this land was not available when the original plans for the new hospital concept plan was undertaken.”
The group also believes it would be an incredible waste of publicly owned resources to see a “$70 million bullding” in the exisiting hospital go to landfill, and repurposing it instead would be a much better use of the space.
“The old hospital building is too valuable and asset to simply destroy; this building could have many uses in the medical field,” the spokesperson said.
“If the building was transformed into an old age care facility, such as a Retirement village it would be a pleasant spot to live with the wonderful views from the front verandas.”
The group is calling on the Cowra community to attend the meeting and contact their local representatives to attend.
They are also calling on locals to sign their petition, which is available at Keady’s Real Estate and NSW State Conveyancing, both on Kendal Street, Cowra.
