Brenda Stace Chat Exhibition At Rosnay Winery

Highly acclaimed Cowra-based artist Brenda Chat will launch her latest exhibition, Lake Mungo, at Rosnay Organic Wines in Billiamri this Saturday from 6pm to 9pm.

The exhibition will run for the whole month of June.

The exhibition will feature new works painted at Lake Mungo.

Brenda was on an expedition there with local artists Ken and Tim Hutchinson.

Lake Mungo Expedition

Brenda was recently camping out amongst the ancient landscapes of Lake Mungo in far western New South Wales. This echoes earlier solo trips to the Pilbara in Western Australia which resulted in some of her most captivating works that won her the Pilbara Art Award in 2004. Paintings from this trip will feature in this exhibition. Brenda finds the opportunity to create works on country, immersed in the landscape, an inspiration: “away from the mundanity of ‘I wonder how the tomatoes are going?’ You’ve got your kit, you’re self-sufficient and you F*** off. Exhilarating! You find yourself. It takes away the fluff of social constraints”.

Brenda’s Extraordinary Artistic Life

Brenda has exhibited in Berlin and South Korea but, now lives in a magnificent renovated tin shed down by the railway tracks in Cowra, where she continues with her lifelong artistic practice. This is her first local exhibition.

Brenda is an alumnus of the Sydney Art College where she was mentored by the Art Gallery of NSW’s Bill Wright who motivated her to travel to the USA to attend the New York Studio School. There, she received tutelage from the Dean, renowned Australian artist, William Wright AM, and attended lectures from the likes of Lee Krasner, best known as the wife of Jackson Pollock but an extraordinary abstract expressionist artist in her own right, pioneering video artist Nam June Paik, and abstract expressionist painter George McNeil.

Brenda’s works have also been exhibited in Sydney at the S.H. Ervin Gallery – Salon des Refuses in 2012 and are held in the collections of both BHP and Western Power.

Animation Career

As artists are often wont to do, Brenda has, over the years, leant her skills to the commercial world. She first worked in animation in 1975 as an assistant animator on the schlocky X-Rated “Tarzoon – Shame of the Jungle” but has since worked on “Who framed Roger Rabbit”, “Sesame Street” and notably, for three years, as the Overseas Animation Director for Mike Judge’s “King of the Hill”.

Other Works

Brenda has also exhibited her wall hanging sculptural works internationally. They are exquisite patterns made from the carcasses of abandoned pianos. Brenda collects their bones, and creates unique cultural tributes to each piano to remember the time before planned obsolescence.
