The launch came about following the Balloon festival in Canowindra. A chief pilot from Canberra who is a friend of Craig Farrell, of Take Off Hot Air Balloon, visited the Garden during the Balloon Festival and told Craig he’d love to fly a balloon from the Garden, so Craig phoned me and made it happen.

It was suggested the weekend prior that the Tuesday afternoon’s weather conditions might be favourable and the timing was confirmed on the Monday. Being an afternoon flight we were able to promote it on social media (we didn’t have time to arrange the usual media promotion) and offer a gold coin donation entry so that families and children could attend to watch the launch.

The balloon lifted off at around 4.15pm on the Tuesday with Craig and his wife on board along with one of our gardeners, Carrie Downing and another young lady from the audience that arrived to watch the spectacle. Shane Budge, Manager, Cowra Japanese Garden
